1. Induction Machines:

Construction, types of induction motor (squirrel cage and slip-ring), concept of rotating magnetic field, working principle, Slip, Frequency of Rotor Current, Relation Between Torque and Rotor Power Factor, Starting Torque, Starting Torque of a Squirrel-cage Motor, Starting Torque of a Slip-ring Motor, Condition for Maximum Starting Torque, Effect of Change in Supply Voltage on Starting Torque, Rotor E.M.F. and Reactance Under Running Conditions, Torque Under Running Conditions, Torque-speed characteristic  of an induction motor, No-load & blocked rotor test, Power Stages in an Induction Motor, Torque, Mechanical Power and Rotor Output, Induction Motor as a Generalized Transformer, Equivalent circuit. Phasor Diagram, Losses and Efficiency,No-load & blocked rotor test, Circle diagram of induction motor. Methods of starting, braking and speed control for induction motors.

 

2. Alternators:

   Constructional features, cylindrical rotor synchronous machine generated EMF, equivalent circuit and phasor diagram, armature reaction, synchronous impedance, voltage regulation. Methods to find voltage regulation: Synchronous impedance method method & ZPF method, synchronous of alternators, Operating characteristics of synchronous machines, Parallel operation of alternators - synchronization and load division.
